Di Maria critical of Madrid treatment

New Manchester United signing Angel Di Maria has written an open letter to the fans of former club Real Madrid claiming he in fact didn’t chose to leave the Spanish side, Sky Sports has reported.

The Argentine left the Bernabeu for Old Trafford in a £59.7m move on Tuesday, a new British transfer record, and is set to train with his new team mates today ahead of the United’s trip to Burnley on Saturday.

And upon his move, the winger has openly criticised the way Madrid treated him in his last months at the club – claiming many “lies” were told.

He said: “My cycle at Real Madrid has come to an end. It’s impossible to capture everything I’ve experienced here in a few lines but I hope this letter communicates what I feel at the moment.

“Unfortunately, I have to go but I want to make clear that this was never my desire. Like anyone who works, I’ve always wanted to progress.

“After winning La Decima (tenth Champions League) I went to the World Cup with the hope of receiving a gesture from the board, which never arrived. Many things and many lies were told. Someone may not like me. The only thing I asked for was something fair. “

Di Maria made a total of 190 appearances in his four years in Spain, scoring 36 goals.

Despite leaving with what was a tinge of sadness the player has expressed nothing but excitement to be starting life a Manchester United – stating it was the only club he would have left to join.

He also spoke of his admiration for new coach Louis van Gaal and could not wait to play for a coach with such a proven track record.
