Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been angered by comments made by England boss Roy Hodgson regarding the fitness of left-back Luke Shaw, BBC
Shortly after arriving in the United States for Man Utd’s pre-season tour, van Gaal made Shaw train alone to improve his fitness. The £27m signing from Southampton has been sidelined for the start of the campaign with a hamstring injury, but Hodgson voiced his own concerns over his fitness on Wednesday.
Hodgson said that he had some worries over the World Cup, and admitted that he welcomes van Gaal’s attempts to improve his condition. However, the Dutchman has responded by defending Shaw, praising his performance level in training and willingness to become fitter.
When asked about Hodgson’s remarks, he said: “Roy Hodgson cannot judge at this moment. I have never seen him here at a United training session. I think Roy is referring to the World Cup. It is possible, I don’t know. That is what I want to ask. But now Shaw is doing a great job.”
“In the United States I said to Luke, ‘you came here and you were not fit’. I changed his programme and he did everything that he had to do to be fit. Now he is an example in the dressing room. He is training fantastically.”
