Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has criticised Southampton counterpart Ronald Koeman over the manner of the Saints’ pursuit of Ron Vlaar, the
Koeman has gone public with his desire to sign the Netherlands international, drawing the ire of Lambert, who said Koeman’s comments were disrespectful to Villa.
“I think he is disrespecting when talking about other team’s players when they are still their players, he said. “I think that’s wrong.
“I wouldn’t mind if he picked up the phone, but you don’t go public on it. That’s the thing that annoyed me the most and the stance is still exactly the same with Ron.”
Vlaar has been at Villa since the summer of 2012, when he made a move from Feyenoord. He represented the Netherlands at the World Cup, helping the side – then Coached by Louis van Gaal – to third place.
The 29-year-old has made 66 appearances for the Midlands club and played in all 7 of the Netherlands’ games at the World Cup in Brazil. Vlaar also lined up for Villa in their season-opening win over Stoke City on Saturday.
