Last season’s Premier League top two meet on Monday as Manchester City and Liverpool contest a heavyweight clash at the Etihad Stadium.
The champions were not at full strength or at their potent and powerful best at Newcastle United in their opening match, but still looked very comfortable and were never seriously troubled at the back. Fernando seemed to settle well into the midfield, while Sergio Aguero typically marked his first appearance of the season with a goal. Despite that, tougher tests lie ahead, and this is the first serious test of their title credentials.
Brendan Rodgers’ Reds will first and foremost be targeting an improvement after a lacklustre display at home to Southampton in their first game. The verve and vigour of last season was almost totally absent and they ended up very fortunate to run out 2-1 winners, with Simon Mignolet making two superb saves to edge them over the line. This game will show if are capable of going one better this season.
Aguero is likely to be left on the bench again for Man City, so Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic should continue in attack. New signing Eliaquim Mangala is not fit enough to play.
Liverpool could give a debut to Alberto Moreno, as well as fellow new boy Lazar Markovic, who has recovered from the injury which kept him out against Southampton.
