Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he isn’t expecting imminent developments regarding the potential transfer of Olympiakos defender Kostas Manolas, the
Wenger admitted that the Gunners are in need of new faces in defence but can’t say there will be new arrivals in the short-term. “Honestly, we are not close to signing anybody,” Wenger said. “I have nothing special to add on that at the moment.
“We are a bit short at the back, yes,” he added. “But we should have [Per] Mertesacker and [Mesut] Ozil and [Lukas] Podolski available again at the weekend. Let’s hope they are in good shape when we go home.”
Arsenal have signed right-backs Mathieu Debuchy and Callum Chambers from Newcastle United and Southampton respectively, having lost Bacary Sagna on a free transfer to Manchester City.
Chambers has though been used as a central defender, partnering Laurent Koscielny in all three of the club’s fixtures so far – the 3-0 Community Shield win over Premier League champions Manchester City, the 2-1 league victory against Crystal Palace and the 0-0 draw with Besiktas in Tuesday’s Champions League play-off first-leg.
