Sunderland are close to completing a deal to sign Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell, who is on Wearside for talks with the Black Cats, according to BBC
Talks are ongoing between the two parties but a deal is said to close, with Rodwell also set to have a medical. The transfer fee is reportedly in the region of £10m, and the move would end a two-year spell at the Etihad Stadium for Rodwell in which he has only managed 16 Premier League appearances.
Signed from Everton for £12m in the summer of 2012, the 23-year-old has been dogged by injury problems, but has otherwise struggled to find a way past the likes of Fernandinho, Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure in the pecking order. His only two goals for the Citizens came in the same game – a 3-2 home defeat to Norwich City on the final day of the 2012-13 season.
He now looks likely to become the fourth player to join Sunderland this summer after Billy Jones, Jordi Gomez and former Man City teammate Costel Pantilimon. Gustavo Poyet still hopes to make more signings, but this deal will be seen as something of a coup.
Rodwell has been linked with Southampton as well as Italian club Napoli over recent days, but that now looks set to come to nothing.
