Mourinho: Lampard is the past – Fabregas is Chelsea’s future

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said new signing Cesc Fabregas is the future of the club and departed midfielder and record goal scorer Frank Lampard is in the past, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Lampard was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge this summer when his contract expired, signing for MLS outfit New York City FC and moving back to the Premier League on loan with New York City’s co-owners Manchester City.

Former Arsenal captain Fabregas was signed from Barcelona just before the World Cup and Mourinho said that while Lampard will always be remembered, it is Fabregas who is should be centre of attention now.

“Frank is the history of the club, history nobody can forget,” Mourinho said on Chelsea’s official website. “Fabregas is the future; history is history but the future is more important at the moment.

“My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield.”

Fabregas spent eight years with the Gunners, making more than 300 appearances and winning the 2005 FA Cup before returning to Barca, having left Camp Nou for the Gunners when a teenager. He played more than 150 times for the Catalans, winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey, as well as a handful of other trophies.
