Manchester City begin the defence of their Premier League title with a potentially tricky trip to Newcastle United, who will hope to improve after a poor end to last season.
Magpies manager Alan Pardew came under significant pressure from sections of supporters as their slump in the second half of 2013-14 saw them finish 10th, having threatened to challenge for a European spot earlier in the campaign. They have responded by signing five players including French duo Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere, but they may find it difficult to score goals after losing Loic Remy.
Several star players sat out Man City’s comprehensive Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, but it was still a disappointing performance from Manuel Pellegrini’s men, who looked off the pace for much of the encounter. The Chilean has not made significant changes to his squad, but has brought in Fernando and highly-rated defender Eliaquim Mangala from FC Porto, as well as Frank Lampard on loan.
Cabella and Riviere could make their debuts along with Jack Colback and Daryl Janmaat, but fellow new signing Siem De Jong will be assessed. There are also doubts over Cheick Tiote and Yoann Gouffran.
The champions are still without Pablo Zabaleta and Sergio Aguero due to their post World Cup break. Alvaro Negredo is injured, while Pellegrini must decide whether Joe Hart or Willy Caballero will be in goal.
