Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has made it clear he will not attempt to sign striker Mario Balotelli after highly complementary comments were taken as clear interest in the player, Sky
Speculation ramped up in the wake of Rodgers’ talk of the Italian but his praise has been categorically denied as the perceived interest it was interpreted as, despite admitting his summer spending is not yet over.
Rodgers has spent £89m to bring in Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren and Divock Origi in the wake of the £75m sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona – although the latter Origi has returned to Lille on loan for the coming season.
The club also saw a deal for French ace Loic Remy collapse after the player reportedly failed his medical ahead of an £8.5m deal.
The Liverpool boss said: “I can categorically tell you Mario Balotelli will not be at Liverpool.
“In my last press conference I was asked a question about Mario Balotelli and I talked about what a talent he was and what an excellent player he was.
“It shouldn’t be transmitted in to us signing the player.”
A seventh summer signing at Liverpool looks increasingly likely to happen soon after it emerged Spanish right back Javi Manquillo was said to be due on Merseyside on Monday to undergo a medical while Alberto Moreno continues to be linked with a move too.
Upon new signings Rodgers added: “We still have a few bits and pieces we would like to do to solidify the group, but there’s no names or definite signings yet.”
