Martin Skrtel is pleased to see Dejan Lovren signing for Liverpool and welcomes the competition provided by the former Southampton centre-back, the Reds’ official
Lovren followed Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana in swapping the south coast for Merseyside and the Croatia international partnered Skrtel in Sunday’s home friendly win over Borussia Dortmund.
“Dejan Lovren had great season with Southampton and I am really happy that he is with us,” Skrtel said. “We all need competition because that is what keeps you motivated. He will make us stronger, so I really welcome his arrival – and it will only make me work harder.
“Liverpool is not only about 11 players. We will have many games this season, so every player will be important,” Skrtel added.
Liverpool beat Dortmund 4-0 with goals from Daniel Sturridge, Lovren, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson. Lovren also scored last season at Anfield, netting for Southampton as the Saints beat Liverpool 1-0 in one of only two home defeats for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Lovren joins Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Mamadou Sakho, Kolo Toure and Sebastian Coates as centre-backs available to Rodgers.
