Sunderland boss Poyet issues warning to Wickham

Sunderland manager Gustavo Poyet has warned striker Connor Wickham that he will be sold if he does not agree a contract extension with the club this summer, reports Goal.com.

After being recalled from a loan spell at Leeds United, Poyet gave Wickham his chance in the Black Cats first-team and responded by becoming a key figure in helping the Wearside club escape the threat of relegation, scoring five goals in three games to lift them to a final resting place of 14th.

However, his contract is set to expire at the end of the forthcoming season, and should he choose not to extend his deal, Poyet has admitted that he will look to sell the former Ipswich Town man rather than see him leave on a free transfer next summer. He said: “For me, Connor’s situation is clear, he needs to sign a new contract or we let him go – we sell him.

“There is nothing in between. He is an asset to the football club and we paid a lot of money for him.

“Last year, he was a key part of us staying up and he was very important but he needs to realise that the club needs to look after the interests of the football club as well. I suppose that, one way or the other, we are going to have an agreement.’
