Villarreal boss Marcelino has admitted that central defender Mateo Musacchio is set to join Tottenham after agreeing a fee for the 23-year-old, Goal.com
Tottenham have been aiming to boost their defensive options this summer after they were regularly taken apart by the leading teams in the Premier League last season. Eric Dier arrived from Sporting Lisbon on Saturday, and now manager Mauricio Pochettino has turned his attention to Musacchio.
The Argentine was voted Villarreal’s Player of the Season in 2013-14 after a series of impressive displays helped establish the 2006 Champions League semi-finalists back in La Liga with a top half finish, having suffered relegation in 2012.
His performances have not gone unnoticed at Tottenham, and Villarreal are satisfied with the terms offered, and Marcelino has acknowledged that the player is likely to move to North London. He said: “It’s a situation with three parties: the player, the buyer and the club in the middle and, as I have said many times, if the club sell an important player it’s because the right conditions to do so have been met.
“Things will change quite a lot [for this team]. The quality and level of [Musacchio] will make it difficult to find a replacement. Mateo is a very important player for Villarreal. He’s an excellent player and will be a difficult loss to cover, especially as he plays in a tough position to reinforce.’
