Tottenham are set to complete the signing of Sporting Lisbon defender Eric Dier for a fee of £4m, BBC
The deal is subject to a medical, with a deal having been reached between the two clubs. New Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has made strengthening his defence the main priority this summer, particularly with captain Michael Dawson set to leave the club. Dier will become his third signing since taking over, after Swansea City duo Ben Davies and Michel Vorm.
Since he was born in Cheltenham and moved to Portugal as a child, Dier is an England U-21 international, making four appearances for Gareth Southgate’s team. He has made 32 appearances and scored one goal for Sporting, but is unwilling to sign a new contract, despite their qualification for this season’s Champions League.
The 20-year-old Dier is naturally a central defender, but he can also play at right-back or in a holding midfield role, meaning that his versatility could prove useful for Pochettino as he looks to seal a place in the Premier League’s top four.
