Mauricio Pochettino begins his Tottenham tenure with a London derby, as his side make the short journey to Upton Park to face West Ham United.
The hosts have been busy in the transfer market as they attempt to improve from last season’s final placing of 13th, but are now scrambling to try and secure a striker after Andy Carroll picked up yet another long-term injury. Manager Sam Allardyce has been instructed to implement a more attacking style of football, but he will be hoping that results and his defensive organisation will not be harmed as a result.
Tottenham have grown somewhat frustrated by merely qualifying for the Europa League every year, and once again enter a season looking to establish a place in the top four. Due to the strength of their rivals, that looks a tough ask this time around, but Pochettino should be viewed as a long-term appointment, and is certain to make them tighter defensively. He also has quality in attack provided by Christian Eriksen and Emmanuel Adebayor.
West Ham will be without the injured Matt Jarvis as well as Enner Valencia, who is lacking match fitness. Cheikhou Kouyate could make his debut, but Aaron Cresswell, Guy Demel and loanee Carl Jenkinson are all doubts.
Kyle Walker will miss out for Tottenham due to his long-standing pelvic injury. Jan Vertonghen is also unlikely to feature having recently arrived back in training following the World Cup, but Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Michel Vorm could all be handed their first appearance for the club.
