Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has called on new England international Fabian Delph to sign a new contract with the Midlands club, Sky
Agbonlahor this week committed his future to Villa with a four-year deal to run to 2018 but Delph’s current contract expires next summer. Agbonlahor has said that Delph is the kind of player Villa need at the club and wants him to realise his ambitions at Villa Park.
“For me, as a close friend and teammate, I’d love nothing more,” he confirmed. “Fabian does a lot of extra training out of football. He is the most dedicated player I have seen so far since I have been here.
“He would rather do extra training than go for a beer. That is his mentality, he wants to achieve big and go far,” Agbonlahor added.
Delph was named in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the first post-World Cup games, a friendly with Norway and the inaugural Euro 2016 qualifier, against Switzerland, making his debut as a substitute in the former and starting the latter, 1-0 and 2-0 wins respectively.
“I watched him at home for England and he didn’t look out of place – he was one of the best players in both games,” Agbonlahor said of Delph. “That is what England have been missing – someone who can drive forward with that pace.
“He suits England and he suits us. When he comes back, he will still be putting in the hard work and giving the performances,” he predicted. “With his personality, he will still have his feet on the ground.”
Delph has been a Villa player since 2009, moving to the club from Leeds United, where he started his career and spent a loan spell in 2012. He moved to Villa after 58 games for the Yorkshire club and has gone on to make 93 appearances for Villa, scoring six times.
