Arsenal boss Wenger has faith in Welbeck

Arsene Wenger has insisted he has no concerns over the finishing ability of Danny Welbeck after the England international missed a number of chances during Arsenal’s Champions League defeat against Borussia Dortmund, the Daily Mail has reported.

The Gunners fell to a 2-0 reverse but could have taken the lead through Welbeck, the £16m transfer deadline day purchase from Manchester United. As it was, Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted for the Bundesliga side as Arsenal’s group stage campaign started with a loss.

“Danny will improve – we don’t have to make a problem of that,” Wenger said. “He had a very lively first-half. He had two or three good chances, but couldn’t finish them,” the manager added. “There was one obvious one… We have to be patient with him.

“It’s very difficult to go into any individual assessment of any player because as a team we were not at the requested level,” Wenger continued. “They were very, very strong in midfield, yes, stronger than us in midfield. It was very difficult.”

Welbeck made his Arsenal debut in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City, hitting the post with a dinked effort in the first-half with the game goalless. He scored 29 goals in 142 appearances during his time at United, including 10 in 36 games last season.
