Santi Cazorla believes Mikel Arteta is the right man to be Arsenal captain, telling the official
Arteta replaced Thomas Vermaelen as the Gunners’ captain after the defender joined Barcelona in August, having been vice-captain under the Belgium international. Cazorla has said that Arteta was a great help when he arrived at Arsenal from Malaga and believes the former Everton midfielder will thrive in the role.
“It makes me very happy,” Cazorla said. “It was important for me to have him around when I arrived here. He helped me a lot on and off the pitch. He really deserves it.
“There are always players who are born to be a captain and he is one of them. He talks a lot on the pitch and also in the dressing room,” the Spain international continued. “There are always players who are born to be a captain and he is one of them. He talks a lot on the pitch and also in the dressing room.
“It is easy to tell what he’s like [as a person]. He is a guy who lives for football. He is always looking after himself, he is super professional and he also cares about the team so everyone is happy. That is why he is the ideal captain.”
Cazorla added that Arteta is effectively the conduit between the players and the manager, Arsene Wenger. “Whenever there is a problem he is the one that goes and talks to the manager. He leads this group, so this captaincy is well deserved after his hard work here at Arsenal,” he confirmed.
Arteta moved to the Emirates Stadium in 2011 after six-and-a-half years with the Toffees. He made more than 200 appearances during his time with the Merseyside club, scoring 35 goals, and has gone on to net 15 times in 126 games at Arsenal.
