Egypt Coach Shawky Gharib believes Mohamed Salah is suffering from a lack of playing time at Chelsea and criticised the winger’s fitness, Sky
Salah played as Egypt lost an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Senegal, going down to a 2-0 defeat. Salah hasn’t featured for the Blues this season after an £11m move from Basel in January.
“We had many mistakes in passing the ball and we failed to put the required pressure on our opponents but the defenders are not the only ones to be blamed,” Gharib is quoted as saying. “The poor fitness of the players, especially Chelsea’s Mohamed Salah, is also a reason for the loss.
“The Egyptian league hasn’t started yet and also Salah didn’t play regularly with Chelsea,” he continued. “If Salah is off-form, Egypt’s performance is always affected.”
Both of Ghana’s goals came from Premier League players – the first netted by Stoke City’s Mame Biram Diouf, who scored in the 17th minute, before Sadio Mane added the second shortly before half-time. Mane moved to Southampton from Red Bull Salzburg late in the summer transfer window.
Salah meanwhile made 11 appearances for Chelsea in the second half of last season, scoring twice.
