Koeman pleased with Mane’s Southampton debut

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has praised Sadio Mane after the winger helped knock out Arsenal in the Capital One Cup on his debut, Sky Sports has reported.

The Saints saw off the Gunners with a 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium despite falling a goal behind from Alexis Sanchez’s free-kick. Goals from Dusan Tadic, a penalty, and Nathanial Clyne with a long-range rocket overturned the deficit, but it was Mane who most caught Koeman’s eye.

“It was very positive,” Koeman said of the forward’s first appearance. “I think he showed his qualities and he’s very fast.

“He’s a player who likes to play one-against-one,” the manager continued. “He likes to run in space behind the defence of the opponents and that’s a great quality. That’s one of the qualities we missed in front until now, and he brings that in, and that’s very positive.”

Mane cost Southampton some £10m, moving from Red Bull Salzburg over the summer. The 22-year-old was however only recently granted a work permit to enable his first appearance in the colours of his new club.
