Liverpool to press ahead with Valdes plans

Liverpool are to go ahead with their plans to sign former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes providing that he proves his fitness, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Valdes is currently a free agent, meaning that any club can sign him outside the transfer window. However, he is still without a club since leaving the Nou Camp due to a serious knee injury, from which he is not expected to recover until November, and Liverpool want to wait until he can prove he is in a strong physical condition before offering him a deal.

The 32-year-old is one of the world’s most decorated goalkeepers, having won five La Liga titles, five Copa Del Rey winners’ medals and three Champions Leagues while at Barcelona. Despite that, he has been third choice for the Spanish national team for a number of years, behind Iker Casillas and Jose Reina.

Should he join, he would act as significant competition for current Liverpool stopper Simon Mignolet, who has appeared in every Premier League match since arriving from Sunderland in July 2013. Former Middlesbrough man Brad Jones acts as backup.
