Manchester City face another heavyweight clash on Sunday as they look to end Chelsea’s unbeaten record and close the gap on the West London club.
Frustration will be the overwhelming emotion for City after a week where they have already faced two extremely tough tests. They were left disappointed by some of the refereeing as they drew 2-2 at Arsenal, but it was a fair result.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini then had to watch from the stands as the Premier League champions were beaten by a last minute goal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, so victory here against the side expected to be their main rivals in the race for the title would be the perfect tonic.
Chelsea have had a real ruthless streak about them so far this season and that has been epitomised by Diego Costa, whose hat-trick against Swansea City last time out saw him become a record breaker as well as a Stamford Bridge hero, while Loic Remy was also off the mark on his debut.
They may have a 100% winning record in the Premier League after four formidable performances, but a patched up Schalke 04 side was able to capitalise on a rare night of profligacy to take a point in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Whatever the result, this is set to be yet another intriguing tactical battle between the two managers, who are not the best of friends. Jose Mourinho came out on top in both league meetings last season, but lost to his Chilean rival in the title race. However, victory here for Chelsea would put them eight points ahead of City – a large margin even at this early stage.
Frank Lampard could represent Man City against his former club, but midfielder Fernando and striker Stevan Jovetic remain out.
Costa will start for Chelsea after only being on the bench against Schalke. The Spaniard’s presence means that the Blues have a fully-fit squad available.
