Mignolet told to improve as Rodgers eyes Valdes

With Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers monitoring the fitness of free agent Victor Valdes current number one Simon Mignolet has been told to start performing or lose his place, the Daily Star is reporting.

The Belgian performed admirably at the start of his debut campaign last season but towards then end had seen his form slide – with this term no different.

Fans have endured some nervy moments from their keeper with others starting to criticise his speed off his line.

Former Barcelona number one Valdes is currently recovering from a knee injury after his release at the end of last season and if he proves his worth could see a contract offer extended his way in October.

Rodgers said of his current goalkeeper: “I think Simon is a bit laid back. The key thing is to make sure you are on the front foot and aggressive.”

Having conceded from a set piece last time out Liverpool take on West Ham – who are known to favour the dead ball options they have – and the Belgian shot stopper could be under pressure to deliver.

Mignolet has made 45 appearances to date for the Anfield side since joining from Sunderland for a fee of £9m back in June of 2013.
