Roberto Martinez has revealed that Everton captain Phil Jagielka is not guaranteed a starting place in his side with the defender still struggling to find any sort of form, Sky
The central defender made it in to England’s World Cup squad over the summer but struggled to produce his best form for his country – being at fault for Uruguay’s winner that all but ended hopes of qualifying from the group stages.
His disappointing performances have continued into the start of this season – being part of a defence that has conceded 10 goals already, including six against Chelsea last time out.
With Everton and Roberto Martinez known for their solidity at the back – they had the best defensive record last season in the division, the Everton boss has warned that no one can be assured of a place in his XI.
However the Spaniard is convinced that his captain will rediscover his impressive form from last season.
When asked if being captain made him immune from the firing line he said: “No. I think everyone knows being captain is a massive role.
“You need to look after the rest of the players but it doesn’t guarantee you anything in that respect.
“Phil will be a very important player for us but no-one has playing guaranteed, that’s for sure.
“With Phil, like any player who comes from the World Cup, you are, of course, going to need a period to get back to your best.”
