Police to investigate racial Twitter abuse of Liverpool’s Balotelli

Merseyside Police have confirmed they are currently investigating racial abuse targeting Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli after the striker received several comments on Twitter, the BBC is reporting.

Abuse was directed at the Italian following his tweet of “Man Utd…LOL” after the Red Devils fell to a 5-3 defeat at the hands of newly promoted Leicester.

The post was retweeted incredibly over 150,000 times before it was met with a string of appalling racist and abusive comments.

A large number of accounts that comments were made from have since been closed down.

Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out said they received a number of alerts from many social media users about the racist tweets the 24-year-old had received.

A Kick It Out spokesperson said: “We extend our support to Mario Balotelli after the appalling racist abuse directed at him.

“We have since reported this via True Vision – the Police’s online reporting facility.

“During the 2013-14 season, 50% of all complaints submitted to us from across the game related to social media abuse.

“The issue has been escalating and we urge fellow social media users to assist in bringing this type of abuse to the attention of the authorities.”

Unfortunately this is not the first time Balotelli has been on the receiving end of racial abuse.

The Italian was heckled outside Italy’s training camp ahead of the World Cup this summer while his time in Italy with both Inter and Ac Milan was subject to numerous cases of racial abuse.

Police have said they will first try and establish who sent the messages and where they originated from.
