Sunderland vs Tottenham – Premier League preview and team news

Sunderland will be hoping to secure their first Premier League victory of the season against Tottenham, who will still be reeling after their comprehensive loss to Liverpool.

Draws against West Bromwich Albion and Manchester United represented a steady start for the Black Cats, but defeat to Queen Park Rangers in their last game was a big disappointment.

They showed a lack of potency going forward at Loftus Road, and their failure to land long-term target Fabio Borini is a real setback for Gustavo Poyet, who will be desperate to take the points against the club he used to play for.

Four straight wins and just one goal conceded to start Mauricio Pochettino’s reign brought an immense feeling of positivity at Tottenham, but that was somewhat extinguished by a lacklustre performance which saw them end up well beaten, so the pressure is on here to bounce back quickly..

Their record against the clubs around them was their Achilles heel last season, and that result suggested that a soft underbelly remains, although Pochettino will work tirelessly on the training ground to try and put things right.

Ricky Alvarez and Sebastian Coates could both be given their first Sunderland appearances after signing on deadline day, while Poyet could make changes in response to the QPR defeat.

Benjamin Stambouli goes straight into the Tottenham squad for this match after his arrival from Montpellier, but there are slight doubts over Eric Dier, Danny Rose and Roberto Soldado. Kyle Walker is definitely out.
