Valdes set for Liverpool move

Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes is set to join Liverpool, as soon as he is fit enough to pass a medical, according to The Daily Mail.

Valdes came through the much-vaunted youth system at Barcelona and ultimately represented the club for a distinguished 12-year period, which finally came to an end this summer when he decided not to renew his contract at Camp Nou, and as such is now a free agent.

Liverpool have been in the market for an experienced goalkeeper following the protracted departure of Jose Reina, who finally joined Bayern Munich in August.

The Reds had reportedly targeted Swansea’s Michael Vorm, but he chose to move to Tottenham instead. Likewise Reading’s Alex McCarthy opted for a move to Queens Park Rangers over Liverpool, citing better opportunities for first team action at Loftus Road.

Now Liverpool have targeted Valdes, and the 20-cap Spanish international is reportedly interested into joining the Merseyside club.

Valdes, who with 485 appearances holds the record for most Barcelona games as a goalkeeper, tore his cruciate ligament during a 3-0 La Liga victory over Celta Vigo in March this year, and is still undergoing rehabilitation for the injury. However, it is hoped that he will have recovered by October, and will be able to finalise a deal with Liverpool then.
