Arsenal’s Chambers replaces Stones in England squad

Following the injury to Everton’s John Stones on Sunday Arsenal’s Callum Chambers has been called up from the England U21s to the senior set up, the BBC is reporting.

With the Toffees pushing for an equaliser in the dying minutes of their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United Stones jumped for a header in the box – before landing awkwardly and turning his ankle in what looked a nasty fall.

It is unclear how long the young centre half, who has impressed for Everton in recent months, will be out for but boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed he expects him to miss the “next few weeks”.

Chambers made his full debut for England last month in the home friendly win over Norway but was left for selection in the U21s this time round.

England manager Roy Hodgson only selected three recognised centre backs in his latest squad for European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia – Stones, Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill – but did state that were there any withdrawals from the squad Chambers would be the first to be called upon.

And that has indeed been the case and Chambers will now join up with England’s senior players during the international break.
