Chambers and Shaw in England Under-21 squad

Calum Chambers and Luke Shaw of Arsenal and Manchester United respectively have been named in Gareth Southgate’s England Under-21 squad for the Euro Under-21 Championships qualification play-off, Sky Sports has reported.

The Young Lions meet Croatia at Wolves’ Molineux on October 10 and travel to Vinkovci for the return leg four days later. Southgate’s side won nine of their 10 group games with the winners of the play-off taking a place at the tournament next summer in Czech Republic.

Chambers, Shaw and West Bromwich Albion forward Saido Berahino had been mentioned as possible inclusions in Roy Hodgson’s senior England squad. However, they join Patrick Bamford, on loan at Middlesbrough from Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier and Thomas Ince, among others, in the party for the Croatia double-header.

Former Southampton pair Chambers and Shaw both have senior international caps, Chambers making his debut in the last round of international games and Shaw travelling to the World Cup in Brazil as understudy to Leighton Baines. They each left the Saints before the new Premier League season.
