Toronto FC striker Jermain Defoe has admitted that he is surprised at being linked with a loan move to Newcastle United, the Newcastle
The 32-year-old will become available for a two-month loan deal in January, opening the door to any potential suitors from the Premier League. He has had contact with Queens Park Rangers over the possibility of a deal, with their manager Harry Redknapp having already worked with Defoe at three clubs – West Ham United, Portsmouth and Tottenham.
In recent days, Newcastle have been linked. The Magpies are currently lacking in strikers, with Papiss Cisse, Ayoze Perez and Emmanuel Riviere the only senior centre-forwards at the club. However, Defoe is surprised at the rumours. He said: “I was at home seeing other things – like ‘Jermain Defoe might be going to Newcastle’. I’m thinking: ‘What? That’s news to me.’ It was mad.
“If a new club wants you they speak to your agent or the club you’re at. As a player you’re often in the dark.”
Defoe has been playing for the Canadian club since February, when he joined from Tottenham. He has gone on to score an impressive 12 goals in 18 appearances.
