England squad for Euro 2016 qualifiers named

There’s no Daniel Sturridge in the England squad to play San Marino and Estonia in Euro 2016 qualifiers, the FA’s official website has confirmed.

Sturridge was injured over the last round of international fixtures and hasn’t been able to play for his club since, although is said to be close to a comeback and there were reports the forward could be included, although Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers advised against calling up his player.

Rickie Lambert, captain Wayne Rooney and Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck are the only forwards named, with wingers Raheem Sterling, Andros Townsend and Adam Lallana also included.

Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne gets a first call-up while Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey returns to the international set-up, as does Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs.

England play San Marino at Wembley on October 9 and go to Estonia for a match three days later. Lithuania, Estonia and England are level on top of Group E after the first round of games, with Slovenia, Switzerland and San Marino yet to score a point.
