Hughes frustrated by Stoke loss

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes accused his side of showing Southampton too much respect as they went down to a 1-0 defeat at the St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, Sky Sports has reported.

The home side were on top for the majority of the encounter, with the only goal coming on 33 minutes when Sadio Mane reacted well to Graziano Pelle’s shot hitting the woodwork. The former Red Bull Salzburg striker found the top corner to send his side up to second in the Premier League.

As for the Potters, defeat meant that their inconsistent start to the Premier League season continued. They only managed one shot on target during the game, leaving Hughes disappointed at their lack of an attacking threat. He said: “We got sucked into the euphoria of last week. We stood off them a little bit in the first half and let them control the game. Their chances came from set pieces.

“We were better second half and managed to stretch the game, but we didn’t really create enough gilt-edged chances. I was more pleased with the second-half display, but in the first we showed far too much respect.”
