Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher expects the Reds to sell Mario Balotelli before the start of next season, Sky
Balotelli moved to Anfield from Milan this summer but has been criticised for his performances upon his return to the Premier League. The Italy international previously played for Manchester City, winning the FA Cup and the title, before switching to the Rossoneri.
Criticised for swapping shirts with Real Madrid defender Pepe at half-time of Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat against the Champions League holders, Balotelli, who was subbed off at the break, won’t be at the club for the long-term, according to Carragher.
“I can’t change the way I feel about Balotelli, and that’s nothing to do with what he’s done in a Liverpool shirt. It’s what he’s done at Man City, what he’s done at Milan,” Carragher said. “Do I think he’s going to be here long term? No. I’d be surprised to see him here next season if I’m being honest. These players, who are continually moved on, it’s for a reason.
“I wouldn’t say that was the worst I’ve seen Balotelli play,” he continued, in reference to the Madrid game. “I wouldn’t say he was by far Liverpool’s worst player. He’s taken him off because he wanted more intensity. Well, we spoke about that before the game. I don’t think what he did in the first half was a surprise to anyone or the manager.”
Balotelli has scored only once for Liverpool, having scored 30 goals for both Milan and City in his time at San Siro and the Etihad Stadium respectively.
