Manchester United are plotting a bid to sign Aston Villa central defender and captain Ron Vlaar when the transfer window reopens in January, according to the Daily
Manager Louis van Gaal is reportedly looking to address his lack of defensive options, having had to go with youngster Paddy McNair alongside natural left-back Marcos Rojo as his central pairing in each of the last two Premier League games.
Despite spending plenty of money on attacking players over the summer, van Gaal has been criticised for not strengthening at the back, and the Red Devils have often looked vulnerable, most notably in the 5-3 defeat at Leicester City.
Vlaar joined Aston Villa in the summer of 2012 and is seen as key to their chances of avoiding a relegation battle this season. However, his contract expires in June and he has so far refused to commit his future to the West Midlands club. Should this issue not change by January, United could pick him up for as little as £4m, and Vlaar is likely to be tempted by the prospect of working with former Netherlands boss van Gaal again.
