Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney to return for weekend derby clash against Manchester City

As reported by ESPN, Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is set to return to the first-team ahead of the Red Devils’ clash against fierce rivals Manchester City.

With the fledging performances of playmaker Juan Mata, that has seen the Spaniard hauled off in his last two games, Rooney could replace him in the starting lineup on Sunday.

The England international hasn’t played this month, after picking up a three-match ban for a kick on West Ham midfielder Stewart Downing. He’s scored three goals and has made two assists in six league games.

His return to the side couldn’t be at a better time, as his derby record against City is very impressive. He’s United’s all-time top scorer in games against the Sky Blues (11 goals), and could harm a City side in poor form. Manuel Pellegrini’s men are winless in their last three games in all competitions, and have lost at home twice already in the league and Capital One Cup.
