Mourinho – Rooney Rule not needed

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has claimed that English football does not need to implement the highly successful ‘Rooney Rule’ used in America and that football is not racist, according to the Telegraph.

Currently in the top four divisions of English football there are only two black managers employed by clubs – and only after Chris Powell joined Huddersfield and Kieth Curle took over at Carlisle last month.

Earlier this week the chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association Gordon Taylor claimed that the process of hiring managers in this country was flawed, in fact stating that clubs were being held back by a “hidden racism” in the process.

The NFL use the Rooney Rule to ensure that the process of hiring within American Football ensures that ethnic minority candidates are fully represented and considered in the interviews to become the head coach of a side.

However when the question was posed to Mourinho whether the rule should be Implemented here in England the Portuguese was quick to dismiss any notion of discrimination.

He said: “There is no racism in football. If you are good, you are good.

“If you are good, you get the job. Football is not stupid to close the doors to top people.”
