Rejuvenated Newcastle United will be looking for their fourth consecutive victory in all competitions as they face Liverpool in the early kick-off.
The win over Leicester City to break their duck was understandably ridden with anxiety, and the Magpies’ first half display at Tottenham on Sunday suggested that they were reverting to type. However, they produced an instant response after half time to come back and win, collecting a result that will surely have breathed confidence throughout the club.
That was epitomised on Wednesday as manager Alan Pardew made six changes for the Capital One Cup tie at holders Manchester City and emerged with a 2-0 victory, so things are beginning to look up.
Liverpool also managed to make progress in that competition during the week, thanks to a dramatic late comeback against Swansea City. The game’s biggest talking point was a long-awaited goal for Mario Balotelli, who came in for more criticism following another blank in the last Premier League match at home to Hull City.
Despite that, there are still signs that the Reds are struggling to find any real fluency this season, particularly without Daniel Sturridge in the team. This dip in performances has harmed results, with too many points having been dropped thus far.
The home side are hoping that Papiss Cisse, Davide Santon, Mike Williamson and Cheick Tiote will be fit, but Siem De Jong remains absent due to injury.
Jose Enrique will not be able to face his old club after picking up a knee problem, while Mamadou Sakho and Daniel Sturridge are set for at least another week on the Liverpool sidelines.
