Southampton forward Sadio Mane scored the only goal of the game as the Saints saw past Stoke City to go second in the league, reports BBC
The hosts took the lead in the 33rd minute through Mane. The summer arrival scored a rebounded effort from close range, after teammate Graziano Pelle hit the woodwork with his chance.
Southampton boasted the lion’s share of the possession and had the majority of chances in the game too, but failed to hit the target with many of their efforts. Ronald Koeman’s side weren’t tested much by Stoke City, but they were made to work for the victory.
Pelle hit the woodwork again later in the game, heading against the post in the second-half. Morgan Schneiderlin hit the crossbar with his effort too. The likes of Dusan Tadic had a good game, and enjoyed some decent moments of individual brilliance, but he couldn’t build on Southampton’s slim lead.
The Saints did run out worthy winners in the end, and now finish the day just three points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea.
