After their eight-goal extravaganza against Sunderland, third placed Southampton take to the St. Mary’s Stadium turf again with improving Stoke City providing the opposition.
While their visitors were truly abject, the Saints were full of verve and inventiveness with Dusan Tadic creating goals at will and scoring one himself, and Graziano Pelle continuing his marvellous start to life in English football. There has even been talk of Champions League qualification.
It is perhaps a bit early to be thinking about that, but the points dropped by the likes of Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham are offering them plenty of encouragement.
Stoke will be hoping that it will be a case of after the lord mayor’s show, and they also come into this with history on their side, having never lost a Premier League game against their hosts. Victory over Swansea City came in slightly controversial circumstances, but they recovered well after a sluggish start to claim three points which have lifted them up into the top half.
Southampton are still without injured duo Jay Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse, but are set to go with an unchanged team.
Glenn Whelan will be out for up to six weeks for the Potters, who are also unable to call upon Peter Odemwingie. After his winning goal against Swansea, Jonathan Walters could be handed a start.
