After their setback at Tottenham, Ronald Koeman’s Southampton will be keen to return to winning ways when they host a rejuvenated Sunderland.
While it was disappointing to be overcome by former boss Mauricio Pochettino and his Spurs side, Southampton will still be immensely pleased with the way they have played so far this season.
Dusan Tadic has looked a revelation in his attacking midfield thanks to the freedom being provided by the work of Morgan Schneiderlin, Steven Davis and Victor Wanyama. They are still unbeaten at home under Koeman, but they have not beaten Sunderland since 2003.
The goals arrived for the Black Cats and so did three points last time out as they put a frustrating start to the season behind them with an impressive win over Stoke City. Manager Gustavo Poyet will be happy with his side’s resilience, but the link-up play between Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham will have been especially satisfying, and the latter seems finally to be fulfilling his potential.
Southampton are set to be without Jay Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse for several more weeks, but youngsters Lloyd Isgrove and Sam Gallagher could be available.
The away side are unable to call upon injured trio Ricky Alvarez, Sebastian Coates and Emanuele Giaccherini, and could go with the same team which defeated Stoke.
