Sunderland sign former Napoli defender Anthony Reveillere until the end of the season

According to Sky Sports, Sunderland have signed French defender Anthony Reveillere on a short-term deal.

The news comes days after Sunderland suffered an 8-0 defeat against Southampton, with manager Gus Poyet hinting that he will make wholesale changes after a number of his players underperformed.

Reveillere, 34, is naturally a right-back, and will provide competition for Sunderland’s under-fire Santiago Vergini, who had a particularly bad game against Southampton last weekend. The new arrival will offer experience to a defence in tatters, and could feature in Sunderland’s meeting against Arsenal on Saturday if he’s cleared to play.

Spending 10 years previously with French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais, Reveillere has won five league titles, and seven domestic cups in his native country. He won the Coppa Italia in his solitary season at Napoli (2013/14) too, and will bring international and European pedigree from his time spent representing France and playing in the Champions League for former sides Lyon and La Liga side Valencia.

Poyet is desperate to rectify his side’s defensive woes, and Reveillere could well be the solution.
