Van Persie will regain form, insists Man Utd boss

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has backed striker and fellow Dutchman Robin van Persie to start finding the net again following a disappointing run in front of goal, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The former Arsenal star is set to lead the forward line and captain United for the third game in succession when they take on Premier League leaders Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, with regular skipper Wayne Rooney still absent through suspension.

He has only managed two goals in seven appearances this season, leading to some to call for him to be dropped to the bench when Rooney returns for the Manchester derby on November 2.

The 31-year-old has been a prolific scorer for the Red Devils since joining in August 2012, and van Gaal believes that it is only a matter of time before he starts hitting form. “He is a little bit unlucky,” he said. “Like against West Bromwich Albion, when he shot with right foot, it was hard to believe that that shot hit the post and stayed out of the goal.

“A striker needs also a bit of luck and then his confidence is higher, but he is self-confident, so I expect he shall score and maybe against Chelsea.”
