Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has asked the club’s supporters to give Cesc Fabregas a warm welcome as he lines up against his old club for Chelsea, ESPN
Fabregas moved to Chelsea from Barcelona over the summer having left the Gunners for the Catalans, and faces his former team for the first time at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge. Wenger said at his pre-match press conference that he believes Fabregas retains a soft spot for Arsenal and wants the fans to react accordingly.
“He deserves a respectful welcome [from Arsenal fans]. Everyone respects Cesc here. I want him to get the welcome he deserves,” Wenger said, adding that Fabregas initially wanted to return to Arsenal. “He is a person I love and a player I love. After he left us, we are all professional people and we have to respect that.
“The relationship had not broken down,” Wenger continued. “Cesc Fabregas will have a great career because he is a great player. When he will look back in his career, he will find that Arsenal and myself had a very positive influence on his career, he cannot dispute that.
“After that, I hope that for every single person in the world that we had a positive influence and he had a great career.”
Fabregas made more than 300 appearances under Wenger, winning the FA Cup in 2004-05. He also captained the team for a spell before moving to Barca, for whom he played 151 times and won the Spanish title in 2012-13.
