Joe Allen is unhappy with what he sees as ‘disrespectful’ treatment of the side picked by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers for the Champions League game at Real Madrid earlier this week, ESPN
Rodgers made seven changes to the side that lost to Newcastle, dropping captain Steven Gerrard, midfielder Jordan Henderson and striker Mario Balotelli, among others, with reaction to the selection claiming the manager was throwing in the towel at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Liverpool instead responded with a solid performance despite the 1-0 reverse and Allen agreed with the suggestion that describing the players named by Rodgers as a reserve was disrespectful.
“Yes, I think it probably is. You sometimes can’t win with a squad rotation policy, but with the added demands we have this season that has to be the way to do it. That is definitely going to get us results over the season,” the Wales international said.
Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game as the Champions League-holders qualified for the next stage with two games to spare. Liverpool, meanwhile, are third in Group B, level on three points with bottom-place Ludogorets. Ludogorets were beaten in midweek by Basel and Liverpool still have to play both teams before the group stage ends.
