An own-goal from Kieran Gibbs and a breakaway goal from Wayne Rooney did the damage for Manchester United against Arsenal this evening, reports BBC
Arsenal were on top for the majority of the first-half, with Jack Wilshere having two good opportunities to put the Londoners ahead. Danny Welbeck also put a close range header over the bar, where he could have perhaps done better with too.
Chances for United were few and far between, but they did enjoy a late spell of pressure in the first-half, without ever testing Arsenal ‘keeper Wojciech Szczesny.
After the break, United broke the deadlock. Antonio Valencia volleyed an effort goal wards, but Kieran Gibbs deflected the ball into his own net.
Seeking an equaliser, Arsenal had all the ball, but couldn’t find a goal to level proceedings. Manchester United doubled their advantage in the last few minutes of normal time, with Wayne Rooney scored a breakaway goal.
However, Arsenal made it a nervy last few minutes, with substitute Olivier Giroud scoring an impressive half-volley following his introduction, but United held on for a well-fought victory.
