Chelsea are plotting a £20m bid to sign Everton right-back Seamus Coleman in the January transfer window, with Jose Mourinho a major admirer of the Irishman, according to the Daily
Coleman was brought to Everton by David Moyes in 2009, with the club paying just £60,000 to Irish league side Sligo Rovers for his services. He has since become regarded as arguably the best right-back in the Premier League after taking over from Tony Hibbert as Everton’s first choice.
The Toffees have been wary of interest in the 26-year-old – who has 17 goals in 156 appearances for them in all competitions – and so have begun scouting possible replacements. Barcelona’s second choice Martin Montoya has been on their radar, as well as Rochdale’s Rhys Bennett, who is among the most highly-rated full-backs in the Football League.
Branislav Ivanovic is currently the first choice right-back for Chelsea as they have surged clear in the Premier League, but Mourinho may choose to bring Coleman in and restore the Serb to central defence thanks to his greater pace and willingness to get forward as often as possible.
