Olivier Giroud will play no part in Arsenal’s final two Champions League fixtures after the Gunners failed to register the striker, ESPN
It’s been revealed that Giroud was left out of the squad because of the ankle injury he suffered in late August that was initially thought to rule him out until the New Year, which would be after the final group games.
Giroud could have been included in the group for the knockout rounds, which has to be named on February 3, and Arsenal still have that option – should they qualify. Arsene Wenger’s side are second in Group D with seven points, five points behind unbeaten Borussia Dortmund, who on Wednesday visit the Emirates Stadium, and five ahead of third-place Anderlecht.
Arsenal then wrap up their group stage campaign away at bottom club Galatasaray on December 9 and could have sealed their place in the next stage by then. Dortmund have already qualified but two defeats for the Germans and two Arsenal wins would see the London club top the group.
Giroud returned to action on Saturday, ahead of schedule, and marked his comeback with a late goal against Manchester United as Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Louis van Gaal’s team.
