The Belgian’s teammate at the Etihad Stadium, Pablo Zabaleta, also makes the 20-man selection along with Chelsea duo Branislav Ivanovic and Filipe Luis.
Kompany, one of the world’s most highly-regarded centre-backs, has helped City win the Premier League title and the Capital One Cup over the course of the calendar year, as well as leading Belgium’s strong defensive unit as they reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Also part of the title-winning side, Zabaleta appeared in the World Cup final for Argentina as they lost to Germany, while Luis helped his former side Atletico Madrid to an unexpected first Spanish title win since 1996.
The German Bundesliga also has four representatives on the defenders list, but La Liga has the most with nine, including five from Champions of Europe Real Madrid. Of those, Sergio Ramos is hoping to make the World XI for the fourth year in a row along with Barcelona right-back Dani Alves. The results of the final vote will be announced on January 12.
