Liverpool rest seven first-team players ahead of tonight’s Champions League meeting with holders Real Madrid

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has rung the changes in his team for the Reds’ Champions League outing against Real Madrid tonight, reports BBC Sport.

Rodgers has left out right-back Glen Johnson, centre-back Dejan Lovren, midfielders Steven Gerrard, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson, winger Raheem Sterling, and striker Mario Balotelli from the starting lineup, with one thought to their weekend clash against Chelsea perhaps in mind.

Supporters will understandably be frustrated at their manager somewhat throwing in the towel to a side who humiliated them 3-0 at Anfield a fortnight ago. As Liverpool have to travel to the home ground of a side who have won 10 consecutive games in the league & Europe, they are expected to be dealt another defeat tonight.

Real Madrid have been on fire at the Santiago Bernabeu, losing just once at home in the league since March.
