Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has moved to dismiss speculation that the club could make an audacious bid to sign Barcelona star Lionel Messi, the Independent
Rumours that the Premier League champions could launch a £200m offer have recently surfaced after the four-time Ballon D’Or winner told the Argentinian media that he is not guaranteed to spend his entire career at the Nou Camp. He is also involved in a dispute with the Spanish authorities over tax issues.
Messi is Barcelona’s all-time record scorer and at the age of 27 took the lead in the scoring charts in the history of La Liga when netting a hat-trick in the 5-1 victory against Sevilla on Saturday, but Man City are one of the only clubs with the financial power to lure him to the Etihad Stadium.
And ahead of the game against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday, Pellegrini rubbished any talk of signing the World Cup Golden Ball winner. He said: “The rumours are only rumours. What he did was exceptional and there are few players that can reach his level. The record he has got reflects how important he is for Barcelona.”
