Manchester United could make a British record offer to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, according to the
Manager Louis van Gaal is said to have identified Hummels as a player to sign next summer but the move could be pushed through in January by executive vice chairman Ed Woodward and Dortmund could sell in an effort to get as much money as possible for the centre-back.
Hummels’ contract will be in its final two years at the end of the season and to convince Dortmund to let him go well before that point, United may have to trump the £32m paid by Manchester City to Porto for Eliaquim Mangala.
It’s claimed that van Gaal wanted Hummels last summer but the deal didn’t go ahead and though Woodward has suggested United won’t make signings in the winter transfer window, that could change for a player of Hummels’ stature.
Arsenal and Barcelona are thought to be interested in the player too but Hummels has a history of supporting United, the Guardian pointing out he attended a United game as a fan to mark his 18th birthday. He was also part of the Bayern Munich youth set-up when van Gaal was in charge of the Bundesliga club.
Hummels has been a Dortmund player since a 2008 move from Bayern, having never made a senior appearance for the Bavarians. He has gone on to feature 159 times for Dortmund, scoring 12 goals.
